Artist’s Manifesto:
My name is Yaron, and I’m a wood craftsman from Safed. I create Mezuza cases from local wood in a style I’ve developed over the course of 20 years as an artist. This unique style of crafting maintains the unique and inherent shape and qualities of the wood.
I’ve come to intimately know and recognize the unique local wood found in the Galil region of Israel. I especially love to work with the wood of the Olive, Carob, and Almond trees. I gather wood pieces as I wander the forests of Safed, while conversing with G-d in this serene setting.
On the mezuzah cases I attach the Hebrew letter ש, made from silver, designed by me. I sign each mezuzah, branding each creation as completely unique.
Part of my inspiration in wood crafting was acquired by the Safed wood artist Noach Greenberg.
My expertise starts with choosing the right tree, then the appropriate branch, and then cutting just the right piece that is most appropriate for my crafting. Then, exposing the inner beauty and shape of that cutting. Next, the careful polishing and the placing of the “shin” in just the right place. This process requires a lot of patience and love of the wood and its crafting.
I invite you to look at and enjoy these unique pieces of art, and to consider purchasing and admiring these beautiful pieces of the land of Israel from up close – adorning the doorposts of your home
A bit about me:
Born 1964.
Live in Safed these past 24 years.
I grew up in moshav Be’er Tuvia, in the Southern region of the State of Israel.
I served in the Israeli armed forces for four years as a tank Officer.
At the age of 22 I left the country and traveled to different areas of the world for two years.
My first exposure to wood crafting was in 2007, in Safed, where I worked under the wood craftsman Noach Greenberg for 10 years. There I learned the art of wood carving and was inspired to develop my own unique crafting style.
Around 2002 I became religious and moved to Safed. The magical atmosphere of Safed captured me and greatly enhanced my creative inspiration.
I built a studio under my house that allows me to create these delicate pieces of art.
What I find to be the most unique and captivating part of this art is that as I work with and polish and expose the innate natural beauty of the wood, I am discovering as well the innate natural beauty within myself.
I thank G-d for leading me to this beautiful line of work, and for the opportunity to teach this craft to young students. I hope for the opportunity to continue teaching many more young craftsmen this unique style of wood carving.
