Yossef Edri is a contemporary artist based in Safed, in the Upper Galilee region of northern Israel.
He was born and raised in a traditional ultra-Orthodox community near the Old City of Safed, and began drawing at an early age as a way to express emotion and imagination through visual language.
His work is inspired by the Galilean landscape, human connection, and quiet moments of observation.
Combining precise draftsmanship with expressive color and intuitive flow, Edri moves between direct observation and inner worlds.
He exhibits and teaches in the Galilee, collaborates with musicians and fellow creators, and produces commissioned works including portraits, landscapes, and personal concepts in watercolor, oil, and pencil.
I paint to capture moments where the visible and invisible meet, where an outer landscape echoes an inner feeling.
My work is rooted in observation, yet always guided by intuition. A tree, a shifting sky, the scent of rain on Galilean soil — these awaken in me a quiet urgency to respond, to translate sensation into line, movement, and color.
Drawing, for me, is not only a technique but a way of listening, to the world, to the human form, and to the subtle rhythms of life.
I seek to merge precise draftsmanship with a living flow, allowing realism and abstraction to coexist. Each painting is a search: for clarity, for presence, for something honest that exists just beyond words.
Growing up in the Old City of Safed, surrounded by tradition and silence, my art became the space where inner life could find form.
Today, whether working from imagination or direct observation, I try to stay open, to the moment, to the mystery, and to the movement that begins before the brush ever touches the paper.
